  • China is situated in the eastern part of Asia, on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean. From north to south, China extends 5,500 kilometers (3,400 miles), and from west to east it stretches 5,200 kilometers (3,100 miles). When the sun is shining brightly over the Wusuli River in the east, the Pamire Plateau in the west is in the early hours of the morning.

  • China is a mountainous country, with two-thirds of its total land area covered by mountains, hills and plateaus. Out of the world's twelve highest peaks of more than 8,000 meters high, seven are located in China. The highest mountain in the world, Mount Qomolangm (8,828m) stands on the border between China and Nepal. There are five major mountain ranges in China. China is also a country with numerous lakes, with approximately 2,800 natural lakes with total area of more than 80,000 square kilometers. Five major lake regions can be identified: The Northern lake Region, the Northwestern Lake Region, the Qinghai-Xizang lake, the Eastern Lake and the Southwestern Lake Region

  • China also has a large number of rivers. The inland river system accounts for 36 percent of the total land area in China, more than 1,500 square kilometers with a catchment area exceeding 1,000 square kilometers. Among these, the Yangtze River, Yellow River, Heilongjiang River, Pearl River, and Huaihe River are the major river systems. The Yangtze River is the longest river in China and the third longest in the world. The Yellow river is the second longest river in China with a total length of 5,464 kilometers.
