  • Katmandu is the capital of Nepal and also the largest city of that country. Kathmandu was founded in 723 A.D. by King Gun Kamdev. According to legend, before the area became inhabitable, there was a lake that was let out by the Buddhist God Manjushri. The name of the city most likely came from Kastha-Mandap. There is only one international airport in Nepal located in the capital and most of the flights come from within Asia. Foreigners will pay more for flights than locals, however flights are cheaper now because of a lack of tourism. Many hotels offer a free shuttle from the airport to their hotel. Traveling around the city can be confusing because of the lack of street names, but most directions are given using the nearest square, market or landmark. The city can be traversed by foot, but taxi, rickshaw or bicycle is recommended. If one wants to travel to Nepal, visas are available on arrival for most foreign nationals.
