Bahrain, officially Kingdom of Bahrain, is a small island country in the Persian Gulf ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family. Saudi Arabia lies to the west and is connected to Bahrain via the King Fahd Causeway, which was officially opened on 25 November 1986. Bahrain is a constitutional monarchy headed by the King; the head of government is the Prime Minister. Its capital city is Manama. In a region experiencing an oil boom, Bahrain has the fastest growing economy in the Arab world. Bahrain has a total area of 750 km2 with a population of about 725,000 (2005). It developed diplomatic relation with China on April 18, 1989. The national day is December 16th.
