  • The Confucius Temple is located in Qufu, the birth place of Confucius, the founder of the Confucian religion. Confucius lived more than 2,500 years ago and his teachings and beliefs have influenced Chinese society throughout Chinese history, including present times. The rulers of China used Confucian beliefs as a moral standard and they built the town of Qufu to act like the capital of Confucianism. Thus, there are presently numerous ancient buildings and treasures located in this town. The Temple itself was built in 478 BC and rebuilt several times after that. The buildings inside the temple are laid out symmetrically facing a north/south direction. Inside, there are 53 gateways and 466 halls, pavilions and shrines. The Confucian Temple, in 1994, was included on UNESCO's List of the World Cultural Heritage.
