Manzhouli is located on the Chinese/Russian border and is one of the main points for imports and exports, handling over 8 million tons a year with a tade value of 882 million US dollars. This city makes of more than 35% of the total foreign trade in Inner Mongolia and more than 10% of China's total trade with the 15 countries that are China's neighbors. The local government has boosted trade by opening up several import and export companies since the city, in 1992, was designated as an international trading port. The main good of trade since the change are now timber, petroleum and technology and the port uses cash instead of a barter system.
