Situated in the north of Hainan Island, Haikou is separated from Guangdong Province by only 15 miles and faces Qiongshan City and Chengmai County to the south and southwest, respectively. Haikou enjoys a tropical marine climate. The average temperature is 23.8 C, with average lows of 18 C. The mean precipitation is about 1664 mm with rainfall falling at 0.1 mm per day.
Haikou has been branded as the "Coconut City" for the fact that coconut palms are lining all the streets. In addition, many stores sell the widely acclaimed coconut. A popular treat in Haikou is the fresh coconut milk where the top of the fruit is chopped off and served cold with a straw. With over a thousand years of history, Haikou has just recently grown into a key tourist destination, under the guidance of being established as a special economic zone.
