Chengde is located a few hours drive northeast of Beijing. The city attracts many tourists each year because of the many different temples located in the city, as well as the summer resort and beautiful scenery. It is one of 24 cities in China designated as having great historical and cultural importance and also listed in the top 40 Leading Tourist Attractions of China.
The main attraction in the city is the Summer Resort. This resort was built during the reigns of Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (mid 17th to late 18th century). There are two areas of the resort, the imperial garden and the palace. In total, there are 29 causeways and bridges, 16 gardens and temples, 90 pavilions and over 60 rockeries covering a total of 1000,000 sq. meters.
