  • The Temple of Universal Peace was built while Qianlong was Emperor of China. It is located in the north eastern corner of the city and was built after one of the earliest Buddhist monasteries in Tibet, Samye Temple.

The center of the temple is made from several halls grouped together. The smaller halls that are arranged around the main hall form a mandala pattern, symbolizing the structure of the universe. There is a 22.3 meter tall statue in the Hall of Great Vehicle. This statue is called the Goddess of Mercy and has one thousand hands and eyes. It weighs almost 110 tons and is 10 meters around at the waist. The fingers on its 42 arms have a smaller image, 1.2 meters tall, that represents Amitabha, Guanyin's teacher.
