  • Zhaojun Tomb is located on the bank of Dahei River nine kilometers (5.6 miles) to the south of Hohhot. Zhaojun Tomb was built for Wang Zhaojun, one of four famous beauties of ancient China. She was once a female attendant in the Imperial Palace during the Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - 24 A.D.). When the king of the Hun people came looking for a wife, Wang Zhaojun volunteered to marry him. After their marriage, the Western Han and the Hun peoples were allies for the next 60 years. This event is still renowned in China.

The tomb covers an area of 1.3 hectares (76.6 acres). Legend has it that in autumn when the grasslands wither, those on Zhaojun Tomb still flourish. So the tomb is also called the Green Tomb. Steles with poems written by ancient personages stand in front of the tomb in memory of Wang Zhaojun.  Zhaojun Tomb stands 33 meters (108.3 feet) high. In front of the tomb there is a flat terrace on which the poem steles are built. Seen from a distance the tomb appears to be deep blue in color.
