China Nationality

The People's Republic of China (PRC) officially recognizes 55 ethnic minority groups within China in addition to the Han majority. The Han comprise 93 percent of the population. From the dawn of time, China's history has been a story of an immense land populated by several diverse tribes. It is one of migrations and conflict, and separation and fusion of cultures. The product of the intermingling of many tribes, the Han people were among the first to settle down and develop an agrarian society. Besides the majority Han Chinese, China recognizes 55 other "nationalities” or numbering approximately 105 million persons, mostly concentrated in the northwest, north, northeast, south, and southwest but with some in central interior areas.
Having the largest population of 1.3 billion people in the world, China also possesses of the most diversity cultures created by the populous Han nationality and the 55 ethnic minorities. These numerous ethnic groups share China's vast lands but at the same time many live in their individual communities. Each of the minority ethnic groups has its own distinctive culture, religion, clothes, language, food, custom, festival, and so on. However, being Chinese, they are an indispensable part of the Chinese nation and Chinese culture. The relationships between the different ethnic groups have been formed over many years. Each of the minority ethnic groups has a distinctive and different character.
