  • Shigatse is a city that is connected to several surrounding countries and other cities of Tibet. The present population as of the late 1990s is 609,228 and just over 90% of them were farmers or herdsmen. Tibetans make over 95% of the population with Han Chinese making the majority of the rest along with 15 other minorities. Around one quarter of Tibet's population lives in Shigatse along the Yarlung Zangbo River. The town, formerly called Tsang, was at the center of the Tubo Kingdom. Tsang was located near the upper Yarlung Zanbgo River and had a third name, Houtsang. Shigatse was and still remains one of the largest cities in Tibet and also very important culturally and politically. The city was the head of several districts throughout its history and throughout the 50s and 60s there were several high government offices located in the town. The Shigatse Administrative Office has 17 counties, 218 townships, 1,752 villager committees and 28 urban resident committees underneath it. The city itself is located between the Himalayas and the Kangdese-Nyainqentanglha mountain ranges. The average elevation of the city is 4,000 meters. The Himalays is the youngest and highest mountain range in the world and from Shigatse one can witness its enormous beauty. The upper southern Tibetan basin is home to the largest grain production area in Shigatse and consists of two areas, the Larze-Rinbung valley and Gyangze-Shigatse plain. These and other plains form the major farming areas in the city. When traveling to Tibet, Shigatse is a place that offers very many different aspects of Tibetan life and a must see tourist destination.
