Beijing Zoo was originally known as the Western Suburbs Park (Xijiao Gongyuan). Located west of the Exhibition Center, it started from humble beginnings. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, it contained only a handful of attractions, including twelve monkeys, two parrots and a blind emu, and its main appeal was cultivated grounds and gardens, grasslands, groves of trees, streams and lotus pools and pavilions for sitting scattered around the hills. This picturesque scenery closed during the foundation of the People's Republic, to be reopened in 1950 before being renamed as Beijing Zoo in 1955.
