Mutianyu is perhaps the most popular Great Wall destination in China. There was first a wall in the area during the Northern Qi era, upon whose foundations the general Xu Da built the Great Wall. The Mutainyu Pass was completed in the second year of the Ming Yong Le reign (1404). The Great Wall is fortified by watchtowers and by following natural mountainous landscape. It is built from stone and brick, and among the finest of the Great Wall sites. The area is also one of outstanding natural beauty. Mutianyu is the main defensive fortification to the north of Beijing and has protected the capital and the nearby Ming Tombs for many hundreds of years.
