Turpan, one of the few places in the world below sea level, located 180 kilometers southeast of Urumqi and in the east part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The depression is a long, narrow stretch of land covering a total area of fifty thousand square kilometers, with Bogda Mountain to the north and Kurultag Mountain to the south. The landscape also features a salt lake, Aydingkol, where the salt surface is 154 meters below sea level. Turpan is not only known for its low altitude, but also for its scorching climate. During the summer, the temperature can go up to as high as 47 degrees Celsius.
